Removal policy

When we remove records, when we annotate them instead, and what happens in between.

Who can request

Anyone who controls the sending domain named in a record can ask for that record to be removed or corrected. You do not need an account, and you do not need to be the registrant of record; you need to be able to add a DNS record for the domain.

If you believe a record is factually wrong but you do not control the domain, use the contact form and pick “correction.” We will look, but we cannot remove a record on the say-so of someone who does not control the domain.

How verification works

When you start a request we give you a TXT record to add at _uo-verify.yourdomain. Once it resolves, you press a button and we check it over DNS. That proves you control the DNS zone, which is the same thing a mail provider trusts when it decides whether your mail is authentic. We chose DNS instead of an email confirmation because a mailbox at a domain can be compromised; the DNS zone usually cannot be, without the whole domain being lost.

You can delete the TXT record after we confirm it. We keep the token, the time we checked, and the result.

If you have never touched your DNS, that is fine. The request form gives you a ready-to-send note for whoever manages your website or email, and our companies, 37SOLUTIONS and Concierge Web Hosting, can add the record for you. Hiring them is never a condition of removal.

Outcomes

Every verified request ends in one of four ways:

  • Annotation. The record stays, and we add a dated note from you or from us. Used when the record is accurate and the problem is fixed, or when you want your side on the page.
  • Redaction. A specific detail is removed or masked, such as a person's name that slipped through review. The rest of the record stays.
  • Removal. The record is taken down. Its address returns a short note saying a record was here and was removed at the owner's request. We do this when the message came from a compromised mailbox, form, or DNS and you have shown the problem is fixed.
  • Dispute denied. The record stays as it is. We tell you why. You can reply once with new evidence.

Lookalike domains

A lookalike domain is one registered to resemble someone else's brand. Proving you control a lookalike domain shows you control the lookalike, not that the message was legitimate. Requests for these records are handled as disputes: we will correct factual errors, but we do not remove the record because the sender asks.

Timelines

We aim to respond to every verified request within {RESPONSE_TIME}. Annotations and redactions are usually done in the same reply. Removals are done at the same time we tell you. If we need more information we will ask once, and we will say what we need.

Removal is free

We never charge for removal, correction, or annotation, and we never will. If anyone contacts you offering to get a record removed from this site for a fee, they are not us. Tell us at support@unsolicitedoutreach.com.
